The Market of Virginia Tech
The Market is a new initiative of Student Affairs that is designed to provide food assistance to students who, for whatever reason, have a hard time obtaining regular, healthy meals. Such a situation could be the result of a short-term disruption in finances, residing in a food desert, or a lack of access to other financial assistance.
This past Spring the Market of Virginia Tech was set up to serve up to 75 students a week. The Market offered bags of seasonal produce and fruits; options for beef, poultry, and vegetarian protein; dairy items; dry-goods pantry stock items; and bonus treats. Each weekly bag was enough for roughly seven days’ worth of meals.
The Market food access program is closed for the summer . Availability will begin again during Fall 2021 semester. Signups for the fall will begin on August 9, 2021.
If you need food assistance during the summer, following are some possible options:
- 209 Marketplace at Virginia Tech - Open to Virginia Tech students, the pantry is located inside the Wesley at Virginia Tech building (209 W. Roanoke St). Starting May 12, they will operate on summer hours, Wednesdays from 4-6pm
- The Giving Tree - Open to residents of the New River Valley. Clients must show photo identification with a local address, or provide proof of local residence through other documentation such as a utility bill or change of address form.

- SNAP for Students - Federal program for students, not all will qualify, but you can learn more by visiting their site.
