What is First-Generation Student Success?
First-Generation Student Success (FGSS) is a support initiative designed for first-generation college students. First-generation means you are the first in your family to pursue a degree, meaning that neither of your parents/guardians completed a degree at a 4-year institution. You are not alone. Virginia Tech is home to over 6,000 first-generation students. FGSS is a part of your success team, in combination with your family, friends, mentors, advisors, and faculty, we will be cheering you on and providing support as you work towards your personal and professional goals.
College can be exciting, scary, nerve-racking, exciting, and so much more. No matter where you are, or how you feel, FGSS will provide a community you can reach out to and lean into while at VT. This is a space of students and staff who understand the first-gen experiences, and where you can find others navigating this experience like you.
Who is the First-Generation Student Success Team?
You will find so many first-generation graduates, advocates, and supporters throughout your experience at VT. FGSS also has a dedicated team who is here to elevate your college experience.
