11/05: 1G@VT Taco Tuesday

  • Time: 6:30-8 p.m.
  • Location: Newman Library MPR

11/06: Trivia Night

  • Time: 7-9 p.m.
  • Location: Graduate Life Center Auditorium
  • Think you’ve got what it takes to be the trivia champion? Join us for an exciting TRIVIA NIGHT filled with fun questions, friendly competition, and awesome prizes! Who will take home the trivia crown?

National First-Generation Celebration Kick-Off and Week’s Events

11/08: The Kick-off That Will Knock Your Socks Off!

  • Time: 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
  • Location: Squires Information Booth First Floor
  • Kick-off National First-Generation College Celebration Week by grabbing a free pair of socks at the First-Gen booth in Squires!

11/08: Lunch and Learn with the FDA: Using Your STEM Degree at the Agency

  • Time: 12:30–1:30 p.m.
  • Location: Via Zoom
  • Grab your brown bag lunch, headphones, and cozy space, then log onto Zoom with Dr. La'Nissa A. Brown-Baker and Celene Moorer from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to learn about how you can apply your STEM degree at the Agency! This one hour Zoom presentation will discuss internship and job opportunities at the FDA and the variety of experiences you can gain at a federal agency like the FDA.

11/08: First-Gen Takeover BreakZone

  • Time: 7-9 p.m.
  • Location: BreakZone in Squires Student Center
  • Come join FGSS at Squires Breakzone to bring National First-Generation College Celebration Week! The entire space is rented out for first-generation students and friends. Enjoy free games, pizza, and swag!

11/11: First-Gen and Financially Fit

  • Time: 5-6 p.m.
  • Location: War Memorial Hall, Conference Room 243
  • During this interactive sessions students will be provided with an overview of financial wellness basics and will leave with an understanding on how to navigate their finances upon graduation from Virginia Tech!

11/12: Treats and Trivia in Torgeson

  • Time: 12-2 p.m.
  • Location: Torgersen Hall Atrium
  • The CS Undergraduate Programs and Academic Advising Team will be celebrating our, and all, first gen students, at our Tabling and Trivia event. This event will include will fun games, and swag, as we celebrate and highlight first gen students. Any questions can be directed to csundergrad@vt.edu.

11/12: First-Gen and Getting LinkedIn with Deloitte

  • Time: 6:30-8 p.m.
  • Location: Newman Library Multi-Purpose Room
  • Join Deloitte professionals to learn how to build a professional profile and use the tool for your job search.

11/12: Engineering the Future: Celebrating First-Gen Engineers

  • Time: 7-8:30 p.m.
  • Location: West AJ Multipurpose Room
  • Register for this event.
  • Are you a first-generation college student pursuing an engineering degree? We invite you to our First-Gen Engineering Mixer, a special event designed to celebrate your achievements, foster connections, and build a supportive community! This mixer is a fantastic opportunity to meet fellow first-gen engineering students, share your experiences, and network with faculty and industry professionals who understand the unique challenges and triumphs you face. Enjoy light refreshments, engaging conversations, and inspiring stories that highlight the resilience and innovation of first-generation students in engineering.
  • Highlights of the Evening:
    • Networking Opportunities: Connect with peers and mentors who share your journey.
    • Guest Speakers: Hear from successful first-gen engineers who have made their mark in the field.
    • Interactive Activities: Participate in fun icebreakers and discussions that spark collaboration and creativity.

11/13: First-Gen Faculty and Student Mixer

  • Time: 5:30-7:30 p.m.
  • Location: Holtzman Alumni Center
  • Join our 5th annual faculty and student mixer to celebrate the strength of first-generation college students and graduates. This will be a mutual opportunity to network, share experiences, and build connections. This event is an important platform to inspire and empower each other as we navigate our educational and professional journeys.
  • Food will be served for the Faculty/Student Mixer. Business professional is encouraged not required.

11/14: It’s All Greek to Me

  • Time: 5-6 p.m.
  • Location: Torgerson 1020
  • This special event, hosted by Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL), provides an opportunity to explore the diverse opportunities within fraternity and sorority life on campus, specifically highlighting the experiences of first-generation college students with a student panel from each of our 4 councils. Whether you are a first-generation student or simply interested in learning more about FSL, this session will provide valuable insights and connections!

11/14: GenerationOne Game Night

  • Time: 5-6:30 p.m.
  • Location: Slusher Tower, 5th Floor Lounge
  • Join the GenerationOne Living-Learning Community for a fun game night! All on-campus first-generation students are invited to attend and tour our space. We will have board games, giant Jenga, Uno tournament, and more! Food and refreshments will be provided.

11/15: First-Generation Leveled Up! Grad Student Luncheon

  • Time: 12-1 p.m.
  • Location: Graduate Life Center, Meeting Room B
  • As a part of the first-generation college celebration festivities, join the First-Generation Student Success team, VT Grad school leadership, and other first-generation students continuing their education at another level (masters, doctoral, and professional programs).

11/15: Hokie Culture Crawl

  • Time: 4-7 p.m.
  • Location: Squires Information Booth A
  • Register for this event.
  • The Culture Crawl to promote both study abroad and international engagement across the university. Students will receive a map showing each participating office or center. Each stop on the map welcomes students with unique international cuisine and information about their center/office in an open house style. At each stop, the student will get a stamp on a “passport.” learn about that center, and enjoy a food item or activity. Upon completion of the passport, student will receive a unique Hokie World Tour T-Shirt.
