Lyft Pass Program

Students in need of medical transport, including for care following sexual assault, may receive no-cost transportation to and from a local hospital through the Lyft Pass Program.

The Dean of Students, Women’s Center at Virginia Tech, or Schiffert Health Center may send a Lyft Pass to a student’s Virginia Tech email address upon request. The email will allow the recipient to claim a pass covering ride fare to and from Carilion New River Valley Medical Center to receive medical care or a Physical Evidence Recovery Kit (PERK) exam. By Virginia law, no victim of sexual assault can be charged for the cost of collecting or storing a PERK.

Upon obtaining a ride invitation, recipients can click the link to login to their Lyft account and claim the ride credits though the Lyft mobile app. Once claimed, the credits will automatically apply to eligible rides. Lyft passes will expire two days after being issued.

For students without the Lyft mobile app, the Dean of Students may book rides on their behalf during operating hours. Rides may be booked by the Dean of Students the day of or in advance through the Lyft Concierge Program. The program offers 24/7 support, background checks on drivers, and in-app safety features to support the well-being of students seeking transport. Students will receive details of rides booked through the Dean of Students office via text message.

Once you add the pass to your account, it will automatically apply to eligible rides.

Make sure you have the latest version of the Lyft app to access your Lyft Pass.

Should I use the medical ride program?

This program is designed to assist students in specific non-emergency situations requiring hospital care or discharge. Below are examples of when this service is appropriate:

Eligible Situations

  • I was seen at Schiffert Health Center, and my care provider referred me to a hospital for further evaluation.
  • I have been discharged from a hospital and do not have a safe or available way to return to campus.

Ineligible Situations

  • Minor injuries or conditions (e.g., sprains, strains, or minor cuts) that can be treated at Schiffert or an urgent care facility.
  • Life-threatening emergencies (e.g., chest pain, severe injury, or slurred speech). In these cases, call 911 immediately.
  • For questions or more information about the program, please contact the Dean of Students Office at 540-231-3787.

For emergencies, call 911. Virginia Tech Rescue Squad and Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad offer no-cost transport.

Outside of operating hours, the Virginia Tech Police Department (VTPD) may contact the Dean on call to send a Lyft Pass or Lyft Concierge ride to a student. VTPD will continue to offer ride options for students.
